What
is "Fuji Matsuri"?
It
has been held since 1968 in Higashi Hongan-ji Temple to celebrate the
upcoming
800th
birthday anniversary of the founder of Jodo Shinshu sect, Shinran in
1973.
Fuji-wara
was Shinran’s secular name and the festival was held at the time in
May when Fuji (Wisteria) blooms. The Buddha’s birthday celebration
is called “Hana Matsuri (flower festival)”. For such reasons,
the festival is called Fuji Matsuri.
The
long-lasting
founder saint’s birthday celebration “Fuji Matsuri” was renamed
as “Hotokeisankai” in
1989 at
the time of the succession of the 25th Hoto
of Higashi Hongan-ji and the establishment of Jodo Shinshu sect
Higashi Hongan-ji School. The festival celebrates
those who inherited the teaching from the Buddha and the inheritance
of the teaching.

Sha:Li
is a music unit composed from the priests at Asakusa Hongan-ji. The
unit introduces Buddha’s teaching with familiar lyrics and pop
melody for those who feel religion exists far away from the modern
life. The music brings feelings of gratitude and politeness which
have faded away in recent years, and of respect of the past.
Sha:
Li special live will be held at the Fuji Matsuri.
★Wadaiko
(Japanese drum) / Sunday 12:00~14:30
Mr.
Taro Kobayashi, worldwide famous Wadaiko player with 30 years’
experience will have an exciting show together with our local Asakusa
team Taikoban.
Please

We
will introduce all the performance of our young priests.
You
may encounter their unexpected part or unusual ability.

real? Rest in Peace Game” / Saturday Sunday
Throughout
the escape experience game, you will learn the Buddhism by solving
many riddles. Can you safely escape from the hell and reach the
world of the Buddha?! Take the challenge from the hell!

(light of Buddhism) Night / Sunday 18:30~20:00
Lighting
up a visionary and solemn atmosphere with lanterns and gourd lamps.
Along
with
the special memorial services such as ancient court music, we will
light our thoughts for the Buddha.
We
look for participants who want to serve the lantern at the temple
ground and the mail temple during the festival period.
